Porto to the Douro by train

The Linha do Douro runs from Porto's São Bento station to the heart of the wine country, and for its second half it hugs the river. It is the most relaxed way into the valley.

The railway reached Régua in 1879 and Pinhão in 1880, and it still runs most of the way to the Spanish border. Regular trains run all year from São Bento and Campanhã. Nobody has to drive, and nobody has to stop drinking at lunch.

The catch is the timetable. Trains are not frequent, the ride to Pinhão takes about two and a half hours, and once you arrive the quintas up the hillsides need a car or a tour. Here is how to make it work.

The quick answer

Porto to Peso da Régua takes about 2 hours by train, and to Pinhão about 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 30. Sit on the right going east for the river. A day return to Pinhão is possible but long; the train works best with a night in the valley. For train plus boat plus winery without planning, the day tour with a 30-minute panoramic train ride covers it in 7 hours.

How long is the train ride from Porto to the Douro Valley?

About 2 hours to Peso da Régua, about 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 30 to Pinhão, and about 3 hours 20 to the end of the line at Pocinho.

Times from São Bento on a direct service:

StopFrom São BentoWhy stop

PinhãoAbout 2 h 20 to 2 h 30The tiled station, river boats, Quinta do Bomfim

PocinhoAbout 3 h 20End of the line, Douro Superior

The line runs about 172 km from Porto to Pocinho, with 37 stations and halts. Some services end short of Régua, so check the train you board. The CP timetable has the current departures.

No timetable to juggle: boat, lunch, a short train ride and a winery in 7 hours.

Where does the Douro train leave from, and how often?

From São Bento or Campanhã in Porto. CP lists 17 departures a day on the line, 15 of them daily, with 5 running through to Pocinho.

The first train leaves São Bento at 06:30 from Monday to Saturday, and the last at 22:25. A typical example: the 09:25 from São Bento reaches Pinhão at about 11:45, in time for a boat and lunch.

Flying in? Metro line E runs from the airport to Trindade about every 15 minutes, and from there it is a short hop to São Bento or Campanhã.

East of Régua, road and rail share the valley floor.

Which side of the train should you sit on?

The right-hand side going east from Porto, the left coming back. That puts the river at your window.

The best stretch is Régua to Pinhão and on toward Tua, where the line runs right along the bank. Pick your seat before the train fills, and keep the window side for the second half of the ride.

Past Régua you pass the Bagaúste dam, where river boats go up and down through the locks.

Is the Douro line the most beautiful train ride in Portugal?

It has a strong claim, mostly for the stretch between Régua and Pocinho, where the track follows the river through the terraces.

CP calls Pinhão the most beautiful station on the line, and it earns it: 24 tile panels made of 3,047 azulejos, ordered in 1937, show the harvest, the landscapes and rabelo boats carrying wine downriver. Give it five minutes before you walk to the boats.

East of Pinhão the line heads into the Douro Superior toward Pocinho. It is the driest part of the region, with about 380 mm of rain a year at Barca d'Alva against about 1,200 mm in the west, and the landscape turns rockier and emptier.

The opinion here: on a single day, a tour gets more done. On two days, the train and a night in Pinhão is the better trip. The day trip guide covers the tour side.

What is the historic train on the Douro line?

A seasonal heritage train between Régua and Tua, stopping at Pinhão. In 2026 it runs from 6 June to 18 October, pulled by a diesel locomotive.

Per CP's 2026 page, the 2026 season has 51 trips on Saturdays, Sundays and some Wednesdays. A 1400-series diesel locomotive in original livery pulls five wooden carriages built between 1908 and 1934, with 254 seats, live music and a welcome glass of Port. It covers 36 km at up to 50 km/h, leaving Régua at 15:00 and getting back at 18:22.

Earlier seasons ran with steam; 2026 does not. The 2026 season ends on 18 October; after that, watch CP for the 2027 dates. More in the 2026 historic train post.

Is there a tour that includes the Douro train?

Yes. The boat, train and lunch tour adds a 30-minute ride on the Douro line to a boat trip, lunch at Tua and a winery visit, in 7 hours.

The boat, train and lunch tour leaves Trindade Domus in Porto by people carrier, stops at a viewpoint, then boards a boat at Pinhão (the listing gives a 1.1-hour ride in a 1.5-hour slot). Lunch is two hours at a typical Douro restaurant in Tua, followed by the panoramic train ride, an optional stop in Pinhão and a winery tour and tasting. Bring a passport or ID.

The listing says it is likely to sell out and to book well ahead. Nick, from the United States: "Bernardo was an amazing tour guide and gracious host."

You arrived by train. What can you do in Pinhão?

Quite a lot on foot: a solar boat from the riverfront, a visit and tasting at Quinta do Bomfim, the station tiles and a riverside lunch.

The solar boat leaves from the Daurum docks on Rua da Praia, which the listing says is walkable from the station; it runs an hour upriver to Romaneira and back, with two Adega de Favaios wines. The Quinta do Bomfim visit takes 1.5 hours with a Port-focused tasting on the terrace.

For the viewpoint at Casal de Loivos or a quinta up the hill, take a taxi; the climb is steep. Where to stay has more on staying without a car.

A Symington quinta a walk from the station, with a Port tasting on the terrace.
