Most people see the Douro between May and October. Winter visitors get a different valley: quieter quintas, pruning crews instead of pickers, and in February and March a wave of white almond blossom in the Douro Superior.
Here is what changes between November and March, what keeps running, and what to confirm before you plan a winter day from Porto.
The quick answer
Regular Linha do Douro trains run all year; the historic train does not, its 2026 season runs until 18 October. Expect about 9 to 10 hours of daylight in December and January and cold mornings: Régua averages 4.5 °C at night in January (IPMA). Opening hours at quintas vary by estate in winter, so confirm before you go. Almond blossom comes in February and March in the Douro Superior.
Is the Douro Valley worth visiting in winter?
Yes, for quiet roads, low light on the terraces and unhurried tastings. Not for river swims or long lunches on a terrace.
The UNESCO-listed landscape does not close. In early November the vines still carry their leaves, and the terraces can turn red and yellow before the leaves drop. From December to February the vines are bare and pruning crews work the rows.
The trade-off is weather. IVDP describes the region's winters as very cold. Pick a clear day, and a winter trip can look better on camera than August haze.

What is the weather like in the Douro from November to March?
Cool days and cold nights. In January Régua averages about 13 °C by day and 4.5 °C at night.
The IPMA normals for Régua give a January mean maximum of 12.7 °C and a mean minimum of 4.5 °C. Daylight is short too. The times below are calculated for Peso da Régua in local time and are approximate.
Dress in layers. A warm jacket for the boat and the viewpoints, closed shoes for wet schist, and something waterproof. Cellars are cool all year, and a winter tasting room can be colder than the street.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 November 2026 | 07:18 | 17:13 | About 10 hours |
| 21 December 2026 | 07:52 | 17:05 | About 9 hours |
| 15 January 2027 | 07:54 | 17:25 | About 9.5 hours |
| 15 February 2027 | 07:27 | 18:03 | About 10.5 hours |
| 15 March 2027 | 06:44 | 18:36 | About 12 hours |
What is open in the Douro in winter?
The regular train, the towns and many wineries. Hours and days at quintas vary in winter, and estates set them individually.
CP runs the Linha do Douro all year (timetable), so Régua and Pinhão stay in reach without a car. The historic train is a summer service. CP's 2026 season runs from 6 June to 18 October.
For quintas, no single list of winter hours exists. Some estates reduce days, close over Christmas and New Year, or ask for bookings ahead. Check the estate's own site or the booking page for your date, and do it again a week before. In Régua the Museu do Douro makes a good wet-day stop, with its exhibition on the wine land and a wine bar over the river.
| What | Winter status | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Linha do Douro trains | Run all year (CP) | Check the timetable for your date |
| Historic train | No winter service | Next season: watch CP for 2027 dates |
| Quinta visits and tastings | Varies by estate | Confirm hours with the estate |
| Boat trips at Pinhão | Not stated for winter | Confirm with the operator |
| Museu do Douro, Régua | Hours not stated here | Good rainy-day option |
Do Douro day tours from Porto run in winter?
The listings on this site do not state a winter break, so check your date on the booking calendar. Shorter days make the morning start matter more.
A Douro day from Porto is a road trip with tastings either way: roughly 3 to 3.5 hours of a 9 to 10-hour day are spent in the van. In December that means part of the drive back happens after dark. The boat hour at Pinhão is cold on the water, so bring a layer.
Small groups suit winter. The small-group tour with two wineries caps each van at 8, visits two wineries near Sabrosa with lunch, and the listing says it runs rain or shine. One guest wrote: "This was such a nice, relaxing day - highly recommend!"

Max 8 per van, two Sabrosa wineries, lunch and a Pinhão boat, from Trindade metro.
Book thisWhen is the almond blossom in the Douro?
In February and March, in the Douro Superior around Torre de Moncorvo, Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Freixo de Espada à Cinta.
The far east of the valley, past Tua and toward the Spanish border, is drier and has almond groves among the vines. When they flower, whole hillsides turn white and pale pink, and the towns hold almond blossom fairs.
CP has run an almond blossom circuit from Porto to Pocinho on winter weekends, in partnership with the Vila Nova de Foz Côa council. The 2025 edition ran on the weekends of 15 and 16 February, 22 and 23 February, and 1 and 2 March, with visits to an almond grove at Castelo Melhor and the Côa Museum. Dates for 2027 had not been published; watch the CP site from January.

How far is the almond blossom from Porto?
Far. Pocinho, the end of the line, is about 172 km from Porto and takes more than three hours by train.
The Linha do Douro runs about 172 km from Porto to Pocinho (CP tripbook). The 2025 almond circuit left Campanhã at 07:25 and reached Pocinho at 10:48. The standard Porto wine day tours do not go this far east; they turn around in the Régua to Pinhão area.
For blossom, either take the CP circuit when it runs or spend a night in the valley and drive east. The where to stay guide compares Pinhão and Régua as bases.
What should you do in Porto on a wet winter day?
Go to the Port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from the old town. They are indoors, cool all year and close to the centre.
The lodges are where Port traditionally ages, in Gaia rather than in the valley. The Cálem cellar tour takes an hour: a short interactive museum on the Douro, 30 minutes in the cellars and a tasting. The listing states it is wheelchair accessible, and guests describe it as a quick introduction rather than an expert session.
It works as a warm-up before a Douro day or as a rainy-day plan B when the valley forecast looks grim.
